Zotero

The PRAN team uses Zotero, a free reference management software, to organize a growing collection of core SSAI academic and grey literature resources collected by PRAN researchers and research assistants. We encourage all of our official project partners to use the Zotero library to save time identifying relevant articles.

We developed and continue to develop Zotero training resources to support our partners and network. Learn to collect, organize, annotate, cite, and share your findings effortlessly!

Zotero Training (Repeat Workshop), February 13, 2026
A one-day workshop introducing Zotero, a free and easy-to-use tool for managing research sources and citations. Mandatory: Complete the Zotero Setup Checklist prior to the workshop. All participants must complete the Zotero setup in advance. This will not be covered during the workshop. Use these Setup instructions to setup your Zotero account before the workshop.

A 40-minute introduction to Zotero covering the basics and like how Zotero will transform your research experience, enabling streamlined collaboration and efficient information management. 

From Chaos to Catalog–Getting Items into Your Library, February 19, 2025 
Building a well-stocked Zotero library starts here! Learn how to effortlessly import research materials into your library. This session will cover adding items via browser extensions, importing PDFs, and manually entering data for unique sources. You'll also discover how to organize library folders for seamless management. Whether you're gathering journal articles, web pages, or books, this session ensures you start with a solid foundation for your research.

Master Your Library–Organizing and Taking Notes, March 19, 2025 
Turn your Zotero library into a research powerhouse. Learn how to use collections, sub-collections, and tags to organize your materials effectively. This session will also introduce you to Zotero’s note-taking features, enabling you to annotate PDFs and attach notes to specific references. By the end, you’ll have a streamlined, searchable library that keeps all your ideas and resources in one place.

Cite Like a Pro–Bibliographies, Citations, and Reports, April 23, 2025 
Make your writing shine with perfectly formatted citations and bibliographies. This session will show you how to insert citations directly into your documents and quickly generate bibliographies in any style. You'll also learn to create detailed reports from your library, making it easier to share summaries of your research. Whether you're preparing a manuscript or a presentation, Zotero has the tools to save you hours of work.

Collaborate Smarter–Syncing, Sharing, and Backup, May 21, 2025 
Sync, Share & Troubleshoot: Wrap up your Zotero journey with a power-packed session that ties everything together. Learn how to sync your library across devices, collaborate using group libraries, and keep your data safe with backup strategies. We’ll also dive into how to troubleshoot common issues and streamline your research process. To cap it all off, take on a final challenge activity that tests your Zotero skills–syncing, citing, organizing, and sharing like a pro. Whether you're working solo or as part of a research team, this session will leave you ready to get the most out of Zotero.

Zotero 3-day Workshop, June, 2025
A hands-on, time-saving Zotero Workshop held from June 11th-13th at 9-11 am MT (ET 11-1 pm, AT 12-2 pm). This workshop was intended for those new to Zotero and those just needing a refresher!
The Zotero Workshop will be held again at a future date based on demand. 

Zotero 3-day Workshop, July & August, 2025
Back due to popular demand, this hands-on, time-saving Zotero 3-day Workshop was held on consecutive Fridays (July 25, August 1, & August 8). This workshop was designed for those new to Zotero, those just needing a refresher, and everyone in-between! Participants received practical, guided walkthroughs, organizational tips, and go-to time-savers.

These training items were developed to support PRAN research assistants and partners conducting PRAN research activities related to semi-structured interviews.

NVivo Training, February 6, 2026
This workshop introduces NVivo, a qualitative data analysis software used for organizing, coding, and analyzing text-based data such as interviews, focus groups, and documents. You’ll practice coding data, explore themes, and learn how NVivo can support qualitative and mixed-methods research. Please ensure you have a functioning NVivo account prior to attending. To fully participate, you must complete the University of Toronto NVivo tutorial before the session. The tutorial introduces essential terminology and basic actions that our training will build upon. Please note: the tutorial will take approximately 2–4 hours, depending on your pace.

Please ensure you are familiar with the basics covered in the tutorial. While we’ll support one another during the training, a minimum level of knowledge is required. Please complete the NVivo Checklist prior to the workshop. Please review the basics of Thematic analysis training guide, as outlined in the attached document. This will help you as you practice coding during the workshop.

PRAN Research Interview training module provides hands-on training to research assistants and PRAN partners to prepare participants to conduct semi-structured interviews and develop interview skills. This training is tailored to support participants in carrying out high-quality qualitative interviews with participants from Sub-Saharan African communities in Canada. The training includes a research interview guide.

PRAN Research Interview training module provides hands-on training to research assistants and PRAN partners to prepare participants to conduct semi-structured interviews and develop interview skills. This training is tailored to support participants in carrying out high-quality qualitative interviews with participants from Sub-Saharan African communities in Canada. The training includes a research interview guide.

Interview Training, June 20, 2025
PRAN Research Interview training module provided hands-on training to research assistants and PRAN partners to prepare participants to conduct semi-structured interviews and develop interview skills. This training was tailored to support participants in carrying out high-quality qualitative interviews with participants from Sub-Saharan African communities in Canada, but was the first session offered in the series.
