Our Journey So Far

Our Program adopts a holistic approach, integrating various activities like research projects, collaborations with partners, sharing of knowledge, and effective communication strategies. Through our dedication, we started making significant progress in driving meaningful change and cultivating valuable partnerships.

Our journey: Participating in a month long exhibition, conference and festival of arts. Developing protocol guidelines for SSAIs data use based on First Nations principles. Conducting a scoping review to understand the experiences of SSAI entrepreneurs and the level of their knowledge in navigating the Canadian entrepreneurial system. Developed the UofA’s Gender Institute, offering web-based courses on research, leadership, and community engagement. Conducted a literature review, engaged community partners, created frameworks to address IPV in African, Caribbean, and Black (ACB) communities in Alberta. Designing a cross sectional survey to record data on resilience and what it means for Sub-Saharan African immigrants and contribute to existing data banks.
Here are some notable initiatives and partnerships we are proud of:
  1. Our partnership with the Canadian Centre for Ethnomusicology at the University of Alberta included a month-long exhibition, a conference, and a festival of arts night event. Scholars’ contributions will be featured in a book centered around PRAN’s theme of resilience and cultural strength in the diaspora through the lens of performance.

  2. In collaboration with Kule Institute for Advanced Study and AI 4Society of the University of Alberta, we are developing protocol-guidelines SSAIs data use. A two-year initiative (2021-2 and 2022-3) drawing from the First Nations principles referred to as OCAP.

  3. Partnering with the Black Entrepreneurship Knowledge Hub (BEKH), we are conducting a scoping review on the experiences of SSAI entrepreneurs in Canada to understand the state of academic knowledge currently available, and how it can be used to inform meaningful interventions for SSAI entrepreneurs across the country. 4. We collaborated with the University of Alberta, African Centre and the Pan-African Collaboration for Excellence (PACE) to address Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) in Black communities in Alberta. Funded by Canada’s Women and Gender Equality, we’ve conducted a literature review, engaged community partners, created models, and developed frameworks to address IPV in African, Caribbean, and Black (ACB) communities in Alberta.

  5. Most recently, led by Dr. Zoua Vang and her team, we are designing a cross sectional survey to record data on resilience and what it means for Sub-Saharan African immigrants and contribute to existing data banks (e.g. Statistics Canada) that often exclude smaller groups like SSAIs.

  6. Our team facilitated the development of the University of Alberta’s Gender Institute, offering web-based courses on research, leadership, and community engagement. This Institute serves as the foundation for PRAN’s Capacity Building Institute, mentoring scholars, promoting collaborative research, and advocating for equity. Through this platform, we aim to empower researchers and use research to raise awareness to leaders and foster positive change.

These achievements demonstrate PRAN’s commitment to making a tangible and lasting impact. We are determined to build upon this momentum and continue making a meaningful difference in the future.
