PRAN’s first Annual Meeting took place on June 23rd & 24th, 2023, at York University in Toronto. The event brought together a diverse group of partners, including academics, researchers, students, non-profit workers, and community representatives.

Director Dr. Philomena Okeke-Ijherika, kicked off the meeting by highlighting PRAN’s key goals:

  • Supporting the SSAI community
  • Redefining resilience by adopting a more inclusive and community-engaged approach
  • Training graduate students and early career researchers
  • Fostering a network of academic and community partners to create a support network for SSAI newcomers in Canada

The meeting involved a discussion of the priority areas for PRAN, and members shared updates on core projects like the cross-sectional survey, longitudinal survey, and community scans, as well as partner-driven initiatives.

A standout moment was Dr. Omar Yaqub’s presentation on the Data Use Protocol. Dr. Yaqub introduced his transformative application, Transform, which focuses on traauma-informed data intake, consent-based collection, and effective communication. These methods align seamlessly with PRAN’s community-engaged data collection.

PRAN members decided that the team should prepare a data collection protocol for working with African communities, which will encourage more equitable data collection processes in the future.

Reflecting PRAN’s community-first approach, the meeting was catered by SSAI community chefs, aligning with PRAN’s mission to support the community beyond research outcomes.
