Our Approach

Our methodology and approach is deeply rooted in incorporating traditional African knowledge systems and engaging with communities throughout the research process. Our non-academic partners actively contribute to the design of our research process, questionnaires, reports, and other engagement strategies.

Our research principles are guided by the concept of Ubuntu– I am because we are. We actively seek collaborations with diverse partners, including academics, non-government organizations, post-secondary vocational institutions, private financial partners, and government organizations.

PRAN places strong emphasis on knowledge mobilization and ensuring that our partners benefit from our research findings and deliverables. We believe in effective knowledge sharing, which influences our methods of knowledge production and circulation.

Expected Outcomes

Expected Outcomes

Our partnership thrives on the active involvement of our invaluable collaborators and research participants, including SSAI women, men, communities, service providers, and policymakers. At every stage of our projects, they play a pivotal role, shaping the course of our efforts. The anticipated outcomes highlight the various advantages that PRAN brings, as outlined below:

1. Knowledge Creation: Our research findings enrich the realm of SSAI scholarship and pedagogies, reaching both academic avenues such as conferences, reports, and publications, as well as accessible virtual platforms like podcasts, webinars, and videos. Our cross-sectional survey contributes to existing data repositories, ensuring the inclusion of marginalized populations. We ensure diverse participation, involving religious and community leaders to develop novel research methodologies. PRAN fosters interdisciplinary dialogue, advancing feminist, resilience, Afro-centric, and Critical Race theoretical approaches.
2. Training & Mentoring PRAN enhances research experience and skills for our Research Assistants and Highly Qualified Personnel, granting them access to unique sources of knowledge. Our Capacity Building Institute (CBI) addresses gaps in conventional graduate programs, emphasizing essential qualities such as leadership, equity, diversity, and inclusion. RAs and HQPs, alongside community partners, present at conferences and collaborate as co-authors in publications.
3. Enhanced Collaboration PRAN strengthens stakeholder networks amplifying voices that have often been silenced. We bridge the gap between under-resourced support avenues and established mainstream agencies, facilitating connections that enhance collective strength.
4. Enhanced Professional Practice PRAN leverages partnerships with organizations like the Royal Bank of Canada and Northern Alberta Institute of Technology to inform community-based programs and services. Insights gained benefit not only from SSAIs but also other collectivist cultures among Canadian populations, such as other immigrants and Indigenous communities.
5. Enhanced Cultural Outcomes Our project is a catalyst for empowerment among SSAIs, fostering resilience and enhancing their lives. SSAI individuals are eager to collaborate and embrace entities that support them. They are also open to critically examining their cultural worldviews to adopt best practices.
6. Enhanced Policy Policymakers gain valuable insights, stimulating public and community dialogues. Our project raises questions that contribute to debates on immigration, settlement policies, and regulations in Canada.
